EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado State Head Coach Tim Miles announced Friday his plans to redshirt freshmen Greg Smith and Trevor Williams for the 2009-10 season.

“Both young guys have been slowed by injuries,” Miles said, “as we started practices and I think a year of skill development and strength training will benefit these two young men a great deal.”

Smith, a 6-6 forward from Ralston (Neb.) High School, and Williams a 7-0 center from Denver (Colo.) Lutheran High School, will benefit from a year of additional work with Miles and his staff, before hitting the court for the Rams in 2010-11.

“It's in the best interest of building this program the right way to make this move,” added Miles.  “The decision to build this program with mostly four-year players will require some nurturing and development; therefore redshirting players will sometimes be a necessity.”

Smith was named Nebraska’s “Mr. Basketball” in 2009 after leading his team to the Class B state title.  He averaged 18.7 points and 9.0 rebounds, earned first team all-state honors, and was selected as a finalist for McDonald’s All-America.

Williams averaged 11.7 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per contest as a senior in 2008-09, garnering attention from several other schools, including Colorado, Washington State and Purdue, before deciding to come to Colorado State.

“I am excited for this year's team and our future is bright, too,” said Miles.  “We are bringing in the type of players and people that will allow for CSU to have the type of success in the MWC that all of our students, alumni and fans want to see.”
