Aztecs to Play Host to Cal Baptist in First Exhibition of 2009-10 Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Viejas Arena
Nov. 2, 2009
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State will hit the court for the first time this season in an exhibition game against Cal Baptist on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT at Viejas Arena, formerly known as Cox Arena. Fans will get their first look at the new-look Aztecs in a game setting after they lost five seniors off last season's school-record 26-win team that advanced to the semifinals of the NIT. Despite the losses from a year ago, SDSU is again expected to contend for the MWC crown as multiple preseason publications have the Aztecs finishing in the top three, including Sporting News, which picked San Diego State to win the league championship. Last week, SDSU received votes and earned eight points in the preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top-25 poll. The Aztecs welcome back preseason all-Mountain West choice Billy White, two-year starter D.J. Gay, sophomore Tim Shelton and experienced senior Kelvin Davis. Joining the quartet this year is a highly talented group of players beginning with the MWC's preseason freshman of the year Kawhi Leonard, Division I transfers Brian Carlwell (Illinois) and Tyrone Shelley (Pepperdine), junior college transfer Malcolm Thomas and the highly touted Chase Tapley and Alec Williams.
Cal Baptist, meanwhile, is a team that opened its NAIA regular season this past weekend at home with a pair of convincing victories. On Friday, the Lancers cruised to a 99-53 win over Bethany, before emerging with a 78-68 decision over Cal Maritime. CBU comes into the contest with five players averaging 10 points or more, including leading scorer Davey Hopkins, who is averaging 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds. Tickets for the game are available online at GoAztecs.com, in person at the Viejas Arena box office, or by calling (619) 283-7378. Season tickets are currently on sale with season-seat prices starting as low as $99. |
