New Mexico's Tony Danridge Drafted by Harlem Globetrotters Former Lobo won National Slam Dunk Contest in April
June 22, 2009 PHOENIX - The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters today selected former New Mexico standout Tony Danridge in the team's third annual player draft. Danridge completed his eligibility and received his bachelor's degree from UNM earlier this year. He was a first team All-Mountain West Conference guard who finished his career No. 16 all-time at UNM with 1,260 career points. In April, Danridge won the national Slam Dunk contest held two days before the Final Four in Detroit. Said Danridge: "I love their shows. I've been to two of them and it's an honor to be selected. I might have to start working on my tricks." University of Oklahoma senior forward Taylor Griffin was the top pick in the Globetrotters' draft, just days before his younger brother, and Sooners teammate, Blake Griffin is expected to become the number one overall selection of the upcoming NBA Draft on June 25. Also chosen by the Globetrotters were 2009 College Slam-Dunk runner-up Charlie Coley III of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; 2009 Patriot League Player of the Year Derrick Mercer of American University; and Tim Howard, a former high school basketball standout and current number one goalkeeper of both the U.S. World Cup soccer team and Everton FC of England's Premier League. Each of these players will be extended an invitation to fall training camp to vie for the honor of joining the Globetrotters for their 84th consecutive season of touring the world. "Globetrotters must be great athletes, great entertainers and outstanding citizens," said Globetrotters Coach Sweet Lou Dunbar. "We believe each of these individuals possess enough of those unique dynamics to merit our consideration to wear the red, white and blue." Following is a recap of the Globetrotters' draft:
