ESPN Radio 920 To Honor Kruger UNLV head men's basketball coach to be presented with Sportsman of the Year award at July 27 event to benefit The Caring Place.
June 21, 2007 LAS VEGAS - UNLV head men's basketball coach Lon Kruger will be honored as ESPN Radio 920's Sportsman of the Year at a July 27 VIP Cocktail Party. The event will be part of ESPN Radio 920's "Longest Sports Talk Show Ever," with all proceeds benefiting The Caring Place, a Southern Nevada facility to help those touched by cancer. "I am truly honored by the recognition," Kruger said. "It comes about as a result of our players doing an outstanding job and having a terrific season. It is also special because of the affiliation with The Caring Place to help those afflicted by cancer." The VIP Cocktail Party will be held Friday, July 27 from 8-10 p.m. at The Lounge at the Palms Hotel and Casino. Tickets are $150 per person and may be purchased by calling 702-277-9918. Gold Tickets are also available at $250 per person, which include a private reception with Kruger in a luxurious Sky Suite at the Palms and a chance to win a one-night stay in the $25,000 per night suite. "We feel it's important that people know that we are honoring Coach Kruger for truly being a great sportsman," said John Hanson, program director of ESPN Radio 920. "We've had a front row seat to the kindness he has for every person he comes across and the sincere interest he has in them. He's being named the 2007 ESPN Radio 920 Sportsman of the Year for much more than winning a lot of basketball games, and we're pleased that he and his wife Barbara will be joining us to accept the award." This past season marked Kruger's third in charge of the Runnin' Rebels. The squad won the Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship in March, finished with a 30-7 overall record and made a NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance - the program's first in 16 years. Additionally, UNLV was 19-1 at home in 2006-07, including ending the season with 17 straight wins at the Thomas & Mack Center, which ties for the 10th-longest active streak in the country. UNLV was ranked 14th in the nation in the final edition of the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll. Information about The Caring Place may be found online at www.thecaringplacenv.org.
