Johnson's Career Ends Because Of Injury
Runnin' Rebel sophomore will not return to the team, but will remain a student at the University.
June 15, 2007 LAS VEGAS - UNLV men's basketball player Jerome Johnson will not be able to compete for the Runnin' Rebels in the future because of a career-ending knee injury. The 6-foot-8-inch sophomore forward, who sat out this past season, will remain a student at UNLV. Because of the career-ending injury, the NCAA considers Johnson medically disqualified, which means he will remain on scholarship to attend school, but it will not count toward the team's limit of 13 scholarship players. He underwent surgery on his left knee on Dec. 15, 2006, and has spent the past six months attempting to rehabilitate the knee. "The nature of Jerome's injury was very serious," said Dave Tomchek, UNLV's athletic trainer for men's basketball. "The rehab went fine, but because of the severity of the injury and the levels of pain associated with this type of injury he is unable to participate in college basketball. After consulting with the medical staff at UNLV along with team physicians, Jerome has decided to forego his athletic future at UNLV." As a freshman in 2005-06, Johnson appeared in 10 games and played an average of 4.5 minutes per game.
