COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore guard Jamaal Franklin and UNLV sophomore forward Mike Moser have earned Associated Press All-America honorable mention for the 2011-12 season, the organization announced on Monday.
Franklin, the sixth Aztec in program history to earn AP All-America honors, helped the No. 22/23 Aztecs earn a share of the Mountain West regular-season title en route to a 26-8 record and third-straight NCAA tournament appearance. Hailing from Hawthorne, Calif., Franklin was the team's top scorer and rebounder in 2011-12, averaging 17.4 points and 7.9 rebounds in his first season as a starter. The Mountain West Player of the Year also averaged 1.5 assists and shot 80 percent from the free-throw line, while compiling 12 double-doubles, 29 double-figure scoring games and nine games with at least 20 points, which includes three 30-point performances. Franklin also received all-MW first team and MW all-tournament accolades, and was an NABC and USBWA all-District selection. In addition, the sophomore was named the nation's most improved player by CBSSports.com after averaging 2.9 points and 1.9 rebounds in 8.1 minutes as a freshman a year ago.
Moser, UNLV's 10th AP honoree, was one of only two players in the Mountain West to average a double-double this season, leading the No. 23/25 Runnin' Rebels with 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. The Portland, Ore., native topped the team in rebounding 25 times, was UNLV's highest scorer in 12 of those games and ranked 10th in the nation in rebounding during the regular season (10.6 rpg). He also led the Rebels with 1.9 steals per contest and is one of only two players in the country to have more than one game with at least 20 rebounds this season. Moser recorded 15 double-doubles in 2011-12, scoring in double figures 25 times, including five games with 20 or more points. In addition to being named the MW Newcomer of the Year, Moser was a first-team all-MW honoree and a member of the MW all-defensive squad. He was also named to the MW all-tournament team, and was a NABC and USBWA all-District selection. UNLV made its fifth trip to the NCAA tournament in six years, finishing the 2011-12 campaign with a 26-9 record.
