New Mexico's Martinez and Wyoming's Vandiver Named to Academic All-District Team

Both student-athletes earn recognition for second time

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

New Mexico senior Roman Martinez and Wyoming junior Aubrey Vandiver have earned Academic All-District honors for men’s and women’s basketball, respectively, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN The Magazine.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team is a part of the Academic All-America program. Student-athletes are selected in voting by CoSIDA members.

For the second time in their respective careers, Martinez and Vandiver were selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Team. Martinez, who carries a 3.48 GPA in business administration and marketing, was a 2009-10 First Team selection. He is a two-time Academic All-MWC and a one-time Scholar-Athlete selection. Vandiver, a two-time Academic All-MWC and Scholar-Athlete honoree, received Second Team honors this season with a 3.65 GPA in Spanish. As a sophomore, she was named to the Third Team.

A 6-6, 185-pound forward from El Paso, Texas, Martinez has started all 24 games for the Lobos this season. He ranks fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game, and has connected on a conference-leading 62 3-pointers.

Vandiver, a 5-11 guard from Laramie, Wyoming, has started in all 21 games for the Cowgirls this season and is averaging a team-leading 9.5 rebounds and 1.8 steals, while adding 13.5 points per game.

To qualify, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average, must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility and must have participated in at least 50 percent of their team’s games.
