BYU and UNLV share MWC lead following victories on Saturday

UNLV and BYU are tied at 4-1 atop the MWC men's basketball standings after posting wins on Saturday.  The Runnin' Rebels picked up a road victory, edging host San Diego State, 72-69, while the Cougars pushed their home win streak to 42 games with an 83-66 triumph over New Mexico.  In other MWC action, Wyoming snapped a five-game losing streak with a 73-58 win over Colorado State, while Utah defeated TCU, 74-58, to end a three-game slide.

  • Utah's Johnnie Bryant led all scorers with 24 points. He set a new school record for made 3-pointers (8) and tied his own mark for trey attempts (14).
  • Luka Drca dished out 10 assists without a turnover in the contest, marking the most helpers for a Ute since Feb. 26, 2005 (11, Marc Jackson vs. BYU).
  • Brent Hackett had 15 points to lead the Horned Frogs, who saw their three-game win streak come to an end.

UNLV 72, San Diego State 69
San Diego, Calif. Sat., Jan. 26, 2008
  • Curtis Terry hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 26.2 seconds remaining to lift UNLV to the road victory.
  • Joe Darger led the Runnin' Rebels with game-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Ryan Amoroso had 15 points on 6-of-8 field shooting for the Aztecs, who suffered consecutive losses for the first time in 34 games.

Wyoming 73, Colorado State 58

  • Wyoming snapped a five-game losing streak and picked up its first MWC win of the season.
  • Brandon Ewing led the Cowboys with 19 points, while Joseph Taylor had career-highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Marcus Walker (26 points) recorded his fifth consecutive 20-point outing for the Rams, who saw their losing streak stretch to six games.

BYU 83, New Mexico 66
Provo, Utah Sat., Jan. 26, 2008
  • BYU's 13-of-16 (81.3%) effort from 3-point range marked the third-highest shooting percentage in MWC history.
  • Lee Cummard led the Cougars with a game-high 20 points, while Trent Plaisted registered his sixth double-double of the season (13 points/13 rebounds).
  • Dairese Gary paced the Lobos with 17 points on 6-of-13 field goal shooting.
