MWC Men's Basketball Weekend Update in PDF Format Get Acrobat Reader


The TCU Horned Frogs took sole possession of first place in the conference standings with its 79-78 overtime win over Wyoming Wednesday night in Fort Worth, Texas. Colorado State, UNLV and San Diego State were also victorious through the first two days of conference play this week. Colorado State defeated Air Force (67-56), while UNLV beat BYU (76-70) and San Diego State defeated New Mexico (81-76). League play continues Saturday with four games slated.   

Colorado State 67, Air Force 56
Fort Collins, Colo. Tue., January 20, 2009
  • The win gave Colorado State back-to-back home wins in conference play for the first time since Feb. 13 and Feb. 24, 2007.
  • In just his second career game, Arin Dunn went 3-4 from the field, including 2-3 from three-point range on his way to a career-high 10 points and two steals.
  • The Rams' bench outscored the Air Force reserves, 24-3.
  • Air Force is 0-5 in conference play for the first time since the 1997-98 season.
  • Air Force lost to Colorado State for the first time in nine games.
  • Air Force's 40.9 percent shooting from the free-throw line for the game was its worst this season.
  • Matt Holland scored a career-high 25 points, including hitting seven three-pointers. His seven made three-pointers were the most by a Falcon since Jarvis Croff made seven vs. Cornell on Dec. 29, 2000.

UNLV 76, BYU 70
Provo, Utah Wed., January 21, 2009

  • UNLV snapped BYU's 25-game home conference win streak with the 76-70 win Wednesday night at the Marriott Center. It was BYU's first conference home loss since March 5, 2005, which was also against UNLV.
  • BYU had previously won 55 of 56 games overall at the Marriott Center before Wednesday night.
  • Wink Adams scored 22 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for UNLV.
  • Jonathan Tavernari posted his third double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds in the game.
  • The game marked the first time the Cougars lost back-to-back regular season games since 2005, and the first time the team has suffered back-to-back conference losses under BYU head coach Dave Rose.

San Diego State 81, New Mexico 76
San Diego, Calif. Wed., January 21, 2009

  • San Diego State won its third game in its last four outings vs. New Mexico at home and has won six of the last seven overall meetings.
  • San Diego State is now 43-13 in the Steve Fisher era when scoring at least 80 points and have now won 13 straight win reaching the 80-point plateau.
  • Kyle Spain reached double figures in scoring for the 14th time this season and 48th time in his career with his personal-best 30. Spain's effort is his first 30-point game of his career. It is the 55th time in school history that a player has scored at least 30 in a game and the first time since Brandon Heath scored 30 vs. BYU (Feb. 24, 2007) that an Aztec has reached the 30-point plateau.
  • Senior Tony Danridge became the 25th member of New Mexico's 1,000-point club with eight seconds left in the first half on a jump shot. He finished the game with 14 points and 1,005 career points.
  • After turning the ball over a combined 15 times in the last two games, the Lobos committed 14 at SDSU.
  • UNM freshman Phillip McDonald tied his career-high with 17 points.

TCU 79, Wyoming 78 (OT)
Fort Worth, Texas Wed., January 21, 2009

  • Kevin Langford scored a career-high 36 points on 13-of-19 shooting from the floor. Langford also blocked a last-second shot attempt to preserve the win for the Horned Frogs in overtime.
  • Ronnie Moss added 11 points, while Zvonko Buljan scored 10.
  • Tyson Johnson and Sean Ogirri led Wyoming with 18 points apiece followed by Brandon Ewing with 16.
