LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball sophomore forward Mike Moser is on The John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list, which was announced Tuesday by The Los Angeles Athletic Club on ESPNU's The Experts sports talk show.
Selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board, the list is made up of 25 student-athletes who, based on their performances in November, December, and the beginning of January, are the frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor.
Moser, who was the only Mountain West player to make the elite list, is averaging a double-double in points and rebounds (13.9 ppg, 11.2 rpg) this season for the No. 14/20 Runnin' Rebels. His rebounding average ranks seventh in the country. He has started all 19 games for UNLV this year and has turned in eight double-doubles. He is shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 78.6 percent from the free-throw line, while averaging 1.9 steals per game.
Moser has pulled down double figures in rebounding in 13 games this season. His season-high in rebounding is 20 and he had 17 or more in a game two other times. One of his top games this season was in UNLV's upset win over then-No. 1 North Carolina in November when he scored 16 points and had 18 rebounds.
All collegiate basketball players, including transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are eligible for this midseason list. In addition, all players will be evaluated and considered for the official voting ballot released in March. The National Ballot consists of approximately 20 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
The John R. Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round during the NCAA Tournament, making it unique among college postseason awards because it takes into account performance in the postseason.
The 36th annual Wooden Award Gala, will take place on Friday, April 6, 2012, and will honor winners, All-Americans and the Legends of Coaching winner Geno Auriemma of Connecticut. The John R. Wooden Award winner will be announced the weekend of the Final Four in New Orleans, La.
Larry Johnson is UNLV's only winner of the Wooden Award (1991).
The Runnin' Rebels will host TCU at the Thomas & Mack Center for its Mountain West home opener on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m. PST, televised on The Mtn., then will host New Mexico on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. PST, televised on CBS Sports Network.
