PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Jonathan Kale and Geoff McDermott each had double-double efforts to help Providence defeat San Diego State 80-65 on Tuesday night.

McDermott contributed 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while Kale added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Providence (6-4).

Brandon Heath led the Aztecs (6-5) with 22 points. San Diego played without leading scorer and rebounder Marcus Slaughter (17 ppg, 10 rpg).

The Aztecs hit eight of their first 10 shots to take an early 25-12 lead. They also made six of their first eight 3-point attempts.

But when the Friars switched from zone to man-to-man defense, they limited the Aztecs to just two of 18 shooting the rest of the half.

Donnie McGrath and Kale combined for 18 points to spark Providence on a 24-9 run to take a 36-34 lead at intermission. McGrath finished with 15 points.

Providence led by as many as 17 points in the second half.

Kyle Spain scored 18 points for the Aztecs, who shot 38 percent from the field.
