SAN DIEGO (AP) - Freshman Kyle Spain had a career-high 17 points and seven rebounds to lead San Diego State past UC Santa Barbara 66-54 Saturday night.

The win was marred by the loss of the Aztecs' leading scorer and rebounder Marcus Slaughter, who sprained his left knee and was helped to the locker room with 12:12 to play in the first half.

Spain went 8-for-10 from the floor to help San Diego State (5-4) stop a two-game losing streak. His steal and dunk halfway through the second half sparked a 15-5 run after the Gauchos had pulled to within a point 44-43 with 10:40 to play.

Brandon Heath scored 15 points while Mohamed Camara added 10 for the Aztecs.

Slaughter, a 6-9 junior averaging 16.9 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, will be re-evaluated on Sunday, team officials said.

Cecil Brown led UC Santa Barbara (3-4) with 12 points while Derek Rasp had 11. The Gauchos never led.

San Diego State's Trimaine Davis, who had missed the last four games following knee surgery, hit three of his four shots and came up with three rebounds in 25 minutes of play.
