BYU Flies Past Portland, 78-54

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Lee Cummard scored 18 points and Trent Plaisted added 16 as No. 21 Brigham Young rolled to a 78-54 victory over Portland on Saturday.

The Cougars (6-1), who had more fans in attendance than the host Pilots, never trailed in the game. A 13-4 late first-half run to give BYU a 35-21 lead at halftime.

The Cougars then blew the game open with a 17-2 run to start the second half. That 29-point advantage (at 52-23) also gave the Cougars their largest lead.

Portland (2-6) tried to keep it interesting with a 19-5 spurt, which cut BYU?s lead to 57-42 with 11:37 left in the contest. That streak included a trio of three-pointers by Jared Stohl, but he finished with only 11 points.

The Pilots didn't have much left after cutting their deficit to 15. After that, the Cougars pushed their lead to 70-44 behind the inside play of Plaisted, who hit 6 of 8 shots and had a game-high eight rebounds.

For the night, BYU hit 53 percent of its field-goal attempts and 41 percent of its three-pointers. Cummard finished the game 7 of 9 overall and 3 of 4 from the three-point arc.

The Cougars helped their cause with a 41-27 rebounding advantage and held Portland?s top two scorers for the season Sherrard Watson and Nik Raivio to 12 points between them. Watson had eight points on 2 of 9 shooting while Raivio had four points while going 1 for 9.
