PROVO, Utah (AP) - Lee Cummard scored 11 second half points and Brigham Young's defense held Portland to 26 percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers in the Cougars' 79-50 win Wednesday night.

Portland (2-4) struggled from the field all night shooting 30 percent in the first half and 22 percent in a second half which saw BYU (2-1) shoot 55 percent and hit 4 of 8 from beyond the arc.

Cummard and Rashaun Broadus closed the door on any chance the Pilot's had of coming back when the two combined for 10 straight in a 2-minute span with 7:10 remaining in the game. The run stretched the Cougar lead from 60-41 to 70-41 with just 4:45 left to play.

Sam Burgess came off the bench for the Cougars and went on a 9-0 run by himself with three consecutive 3-pointers earlier in the second half to give BYU a 45-28 lead 5 minutes into the second period.

BYU jumped in front early with a 9-0 run to begin the game, but Portland responded and pulled within two at 14-12 on a field goal by Walter Thompson. The Pilots would get no closer than that the rest of the game. The Cougars had a 31-24 halftime lead.

Cummard had a game- and career-high 14 points and was joined in double figures by Keena Young and Burgess who each scored 13. Young and Vuk Ivanovic led the Cougars in rebounding with 9 each.

Sherrard Watson and Jamie Jones led the Pilots with 8 points each and Kevin Field pulled down 11 rebounds.
