BYU Wins First Road Test of Season at Pepperdine, 82-53

Jonathan Tavernari leads Cougars with 17 points and 10 rebounds

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) -Jonathan Tavernari had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Jimmer Fredette added 16 points to help BYU cruise past Pepperdine for a 82-53 win Tuesday night.

Four players scored in double figures for BYU (2-0), who never trailed during the game.

BYU guard Lee Cummard, last season's co-Mountain West Conference player of the year, finished with 13 points.

BYU outscored Pepperdine 9-2 to start the second half and shot 60.9 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes.

Keion Bell had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Waves (1-2), who have lost two straight games.

Pepperdine made three consecutive 3-pointers to pull as close as 46-37 with 13:23 remaining. But BYU responded with a 10-0 run and never let up.

Tavernari had 10 points including two consecutive 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to help BYU take a 32-21 halftime lead.

The Cougars scored 12 points off of Pepperdine's 11 turnovers in the first half.
