BYU Tops Idaho State, 84-78 In OT Young records double-double for Cougars

PROVO, Utah (AP) - BYU overcame 20 second half points by Idaho State's Abdul-Ahad Akbar and survived overtime to capture an 84-78 win over the Bengals Saturday night. BYU (1-1) led 42-29 at the half after Austin Kilpatrick's 3-pointer at the buzzer. Idaho State (1-2) began the second half with a 29-8 run, which helped the Bengals to a 58-50 lead. During the run, Akbar tied the game at 45 on a 3-pointer with 12:15 remaining. Two minutes later Akbar gave the Bengals their first lead at 48-47 with a 3-point play. The Cougars hit only 1-of-12 shots to begin the second half after shooting 61 percent from the field in the first half. Down 58-50 with 7:11 remaining, BYU responded with an 11-2 run of its own taking the lead at 61-60 with 4:03 remaining on a 3-pointer by Keena Young. BYU maintained a lead down the stretch until Akbar hit a 3-pointer with seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. Young's shot to begin the overtime period gave the Cougars a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Young also led BYU in rebounding with 10, giving him his first double-double of the season. Idaho State's John Ofoegbu scored 17 while Logan Kinghorn and David Schroeder scored 12 and 11 points respectively. Schroeder also had a game-high five steals.
