Nov. 15, 2006
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - The 3-point shooting of junior guard James Spencer helped propel Wyoming to a 76-71 basketball victory over Montana on Wednesday, after Wyoming rallied from a first-half deficit of 14 points. The Cowboys started slowly and had to overcome a sizzling start by the Grizzlies, who hit four of six 3-pointers in the opening minutes, to build the 14-point lead. The Cowboys began the second half with an 11-4 run to pull back within a point. The Grizzlies answered with two free throws by Jordan Hasquet and a 3-point play from Andrew Strait, for a 50-44 lead with 15:53 remaining. Wyoming responded with five straight points from Brandon Ewing and took its first lead of the game at 51-50. The two teams traded leads for the next six minutes, with Spencer hitting a 3-pointer to put the Cowboys up 61-60, with 7:33 to play. Wyoming couldn't keep the momentum as forward Chris Anderson missed a dunk and Ewing missed a layup after a steal. Montana regained the 3-point lead on a pair of free throws by guard Bryan Ellis and a basket by Mike Chavez. Spencer hit two straight 3-pointers to put the Cowboys up, 67-66 with 4:06 left. Tied at 68, the Cowboys regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Chris Anderson and a steal and dunk by junior forward Joseph Taylor with 2 minutes remaining. The Cowboys added a pair of free throws by Ewing, but Montana stayed close with a 3-pointer by Matt Dlouhy. After Wyoming failed to score, the Grizzlies had one more chance to tie the game, but Bryan Ellis missed a 3-pointer and Hasquet, who grabbed the rebound, also missed a 3.
Spencer hit five of five 3-pointers in the game and finished with 19 points. Ewing led all scorers with 21 points. |
