Aztecs Defeat Murray State in Dramatic Fashion to Open Season Brandon Heath scores 27 points to lead San Diego State.
Nov. 10, 2006
MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Brandon Heath stole a pass in the final seconds then hit a 3-pointer from just inside the half-court line at the buzzer, lifting San Diego State to an 87-84 win over Murray State on Friday night. Heath finished with 27 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Aztecs (1-0) in an opening round game of the Shamrock Invitational. San Diego improved to 6-2 in openers under coach Steve Fisher. The Racers trailed 77-71 with less than four minutes left to play. But the team got a pair of 3-pointers in the final 25 seconds from Tyler Holloway and Bruce Carter to tie the game. Holloway, who finished with a team-high 23 points, had a chance to win the game for Murray State on a fastbreak before Heath came racing in from behind to force a turnover. San Diego plays host to Saint Mary's on Saturday in the four-team round-robin tournament, while Murray State faces Seattle Pacific. The game marked the regular season debut of Murray State head coach Billy Kennedy, who joined the Racers after six seasons at Southeastern Louisiana.
