Banks Lifts Runnin' Rebels Past Aztecs Senior scores 22 points in UNLV's 83-67 win.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - UNLV's Marcus Banks scored a game-high 22 points along with seven assists and six steals to lead the No. 4 seeded Rebels past No. 5 San Diego State 83-67 Thursday night in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. UNLV now plays top-seeded Utah in the semifinals Friday night, while No. 6 Colorado State plays No. 2 BYU in the first semifinal. Banks also was 11-for-11 from the free-throw line as UNLV (20-9) was 21-for-27 from the stripe. Also for UNLV (20-9), James Peters scored 19 points and Jermaine Lewis added 16 points and six assists. For San Diego State (15-13), Tony Bland led with 17 points and five assists, while Tommy Johnson added 13 points. For the game, UNLV made 29-of-52 field-goal attempts for 55.8 percent, while San Diego State was 27-of 65 for 41.5 percent. In the first half, the lead changed hands 13 times before the Rebels took control. After taking a 25-24 lead for good with 6:41 left, UNLV slowly pulled away, building its largest lead of the half at 41-30 with :20 until halftime, when the Rebels led 41-32. UNLV pulled further away in the second half building three 18-point leads, the last at 67-49 with 6:49 remaining. San Diego State would cut the lead to 70-59 with 4:47 left, but got no closer.
