Dec. 22, 2008

TUCSON, Ariz. --- The University of New Mexico baseball team will not be flying under the radar in the 2009 season. Collegiate Baseball newspaper announced its 2009 preseason Top 40 today and has the Lobos listed just outside the Top 40 in the receiving votes category.

New Mexico improved to 34-25 in 2008, finishing second in the Mountain West Conference at 16-8. The Lobos were one win away from advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1962.

UNM returns five all-Mountain West Conference players in outfielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez, first baseman Kevin Atkinson, second baseman Mike Brownstein, reliever Clinton Cox and catcher Rafael Neda. Neda was the 2008 MWC Freshman of the Year and was named to four Freshman All-America teams. Cavazos-Galvez was recently named to the NCBWA preseason All-America team and, along with Neda, to the 2009 Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Award Watch List.

The Lobos begin the 2009 season on Friday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Isotopes Park.
