LUBBOCK, Texas --- University of New Mexico baseball players Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Rafael Neda have bee named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Award preseason watch list. The College Baseball Foundation recently released the list of the nation's top prospects for the national Player of the Year honor.

"This is a great honor for Brian and Rafael," said Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham. "We expect each of them to step up this season, keep this program moving forward and compete for a shot at Omaha."

Cavazos-Galvez is a senior outfielder from Albuquerque and was an all-Mountain West Conference first team selection in 2008. The Manzano High School graduate led the Lobos with a .367 batting average, 11 home runs, 55 RBI, and a .633 slugging percentage. He also was one of the toughest players to strikeout with only 10 in 210 at bats.

Neda was the 2008 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and, in addition to being an all-MWC second team member, was named to four Freshman All-America teams. The sophomore from Obregon, Mexico, became the Lobos starting catcher early in the season and ended up hitting .323 with 17 doubles, three triples and six home runs to go along with 45 RBI.

The Lobos' 2009 season begins Friday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Isotopes Park.
