COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the first time in its 10-year history, Mountain West Conference baseball ranked in the top-10 of the final ratings percentage index (RPI) standings, as the 2009 version was released today by the NCAA. As a league, the MWC was ranked seventh out of 31 conferences, surpassing its previous high mark of 14th in 2003. The Mountain West is the smallest league in terms of teams (seven) to rank in the top-10 this season.

Individually, regular-season champion and Super Regional participant TCU leads the way with a ranking of 10th, for the highest standing of a league team since the inception of the Conference in 1999. NCAA Regional contestant San Diego State (47th), BYU (62nd), New Mexico (87th) and MWC Tournament champion Utah (91st) joined the Horned Frogs as the five league teams to place in the top-100 of the RPI. UNLV and Air Force round out the league's team rankings at 209th and 281st, respectively.

The Mountain West enjoyed immense success during the 2009 baseball season. The Conference received an at-large berth into the NCAA Regionals for the first time in league history, earning two at-large bids and having a record three teams (San Diego State, TCU and Utah) participate in NCAA Tournament. TCU became the first MWC baseball team to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals, forcing a third and deciding game with eventual CWS runner-up Texas. In addition, the Horned Frogs were one of only three teams nationally (Florida, Texas) to finish in the top 10 in football and have a Super Regional baseball team. For the first time in league history, the MWC had three baseball teams ranked in the top 25 of the national polls in the same week. Overall, the league had a record-high four teams ranked in the top 25 in 2009.
