July 2, 2006

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Pitcher Jake Arrieta has become the first TCU baseball player to make the USA National Team.

The Horned Frogs will have two representatives on the squad as TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle is an assistant on the coaching staff.

Arrieta is one of four players from Texas schools on the final 22-man roster.

The USA Baseball National Team consists of the top collegiate baseball players in the country. The team performs each summer in a schedule of exhibition games across America and overseas against the world's top baseball talent. They also take on the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars in an annual five-game series.

The 2006 slate begins Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. versus Taiwan.

Arrieta, a second-team All-American and the Mountain West Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year, tied for the national lead in victories this spring with a 14-4 record to go with a 2.35 ERA. Opponents batted just .231 against the 6-foot-4, 225-pound righthander from Plano. He struck out 111 batters while walking just 37 in 111.0 innings.

Arrieta gave TCU its fourth-consecutive All-American pitcher, joining Clayton Jerome (2003), Robbie Findlay (2004) and Lance Broadway (2005).
