COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Three Mountain West Conference baseball student-athletes were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Division I All-American team as announced June 15. Leading the list is San Diego State junior pitcher Stephen Strasburg and sophomore relief pitcher Addision Reed, who were named to the first team, while New Mexico senior second baseman Mike Brownstein earned second team recognition.

Strasburg, the first-ever MWC baseball student-athlete selected first overall in the Major League Baseball Draft, compiled a 13-1 record with a 1.32 earned run average this season, while leading the nation in strikeouts (195) and strikeouts per nine innings (16.1) as San Diego State advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1991. Strasburg was also second nationally in ERA and hits per nine innings (5.37), and third in wins (13). Strasburg finished his collegiate career as the Conference's all-time leader in ERA (1.59), opponent batting average (.171), shutouts (4), strikeouts (375) and strikeouts per nine innings (13.87), while tying for second in career wins (22).

Reed recorded a nation-leading 20 saves in 20 opportunities this season. He finished the season with a microscopic 0.65 earned run average and 38 strikeouts over his 27.2 innings of work. Reed has allowed only seven walks, with two of those being intentional passes. Only one of the 20 hits he allowed in 2009 went for extra bases (a double vs. Nevada on Feb. 26). His save total is a new San Diego State and Mountain West Conference season record, breaking the old mark record of 17 set by Royce Ring during the 2002 season. In being named to the All-Mountain West Conference first team, he finished league play with six saves and in his nine appearances in MWC action he allowed only one unearned run on two hits with four walks (two intentional) and 14 strikeouts. Conference opponents hit just .065 against him.

Brownstein, the 2009 MWC Player of the Year, led the MWC in hits (101), doubles (23), triples (11) and runs scored (72), while ranking second in batting average (.414). The Tucson, Ariz., native, also ranked in the top-10 in slugging percentage (.611), on-base percentage (.486), RBI (49), stolen bases (20) and total bases (149). He currently leads the nation in triples and is fifth in hits. In conference games, he led the league lead in hits (46), triples (5) and total bases (67), while ranking second in batting average (.451) and on-base percentage (.508). Brownstein also ranked in the top-10 in slugging percentage (.657), doubles (8) and stolen bases (5). He was also awarded MWC Player of the Week on March 16.
