The final week of the regular season gets underway on Tuesday with four non-conference games around the Mountain West. Next week's 2012 MW Baseball Championship bracket will be announced on Sunday, May 20.
TCU holding on to first place, New Mexico in second ... TCU holds a one-game edge over New Mexico going into the final week of regular-season Mountain West play. The Horned Frogs swept Air Force last week to improve to 16-5, while the Lobos went 2-1 at UNLV for a 15-6 MW record. TCU will host San Diego State, May 18-20, with all three games televised on The Mtn. (DirecTV 616). UNM hosts Air Force, May 17-19, to finish the regular season. The top four teams advance to the Conference Championship, May 24-27, at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.
Here are the scenarios for next week's MW Baseball Championship:
No. 1 & 2 seeds: If TCU (16-5) and New Mexico (15-6) are tied after this weekend's respective series, the tiebreak goes to the season series record for both teams against No. 3 seed San Diego State. UNM is 5-1 vs. the Aztecs. TCU would end up with at least two losses against SDSU. Therefore, UNM earns the No. 1 seed and TCU is No. 2.
No. 3 seed: San Diego State has the No. 3 seed locked up for the 2012 tournament.
No. 4 seed: If UNLV and Air Force are tied after the UNM-AFA series this weekend, the Rebels holds the tiebreak over the Falcons with a 4-2 record in 2012 and will be the No. 4 seed. If Air Force finishes Conference play with a 7-16 or 8-16 record, the Falcons earn the No. 4 seed.
Tournament seeding shall be based on regular season winning percentage in Conference competition.
In the case of a two-way tie in the final standings, position in the tournament bracket shall be determined as follows:
a. Comparison of head-to-head competition in regular season Conference play;
b. Evaluation of results from games of those teams tied during regular season play against those teams finishing ahead of the tied position (utilizing win percentage, if necessary, when evaluating results against those teams), beginning at first place and working down the standings to the tied position or until the tie is broken;
c. Evaluation of results from games of those teams tied during regular season play against those teams finishing below the tied position (utilizing win percentage, if necessary, when evaluating results against those teams), beginning at the tied position and working through last place, until the tie is broken; or
d. A drawing by the Commissioner.
