Mountain West Announces Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week - April 16, 2012 Garver and Mitchell earn second honors of the season.
April 16, 2012 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico catcher Mitchell Garver and TCU's Andrew Mitchell have earned Mountain West Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week honors for games played from April 9-15, 2012. It is the second honor of the season for both student-athletes. Garver, a junior from Albuquerque, N.M., hit .450 (9 of 20) for the week as the Lobos went 3-2, including a split with No. 21 Arizona State and a MW series win over San Diego State. Garver was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI in the Lobos' 15-6 win over ASU on Monday night. In Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Sun Devils, he was 1-for-4 with a triple and scored the Lobos' only run. In the SDSU series (2-1), Garver was a combined 6-for-12 with six RBI, four runs scored, two doubles and a home run. On Saturday, Garver was 1-for-4 in the 5-1 win in the series opener and followed up in the second game of the day with a 3-for-5 performance in the 11-4 win. In Sunday's series finale, a 4-3 loss, Garver was 2-for-3 from the plate and recorded 11 putouts and an assist from his defensive position behind the plate. Mitchell, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, earned a 5-0 win on April 13 in the Horned Frogs series opener against Air Force. Mitchell threw for seven innings, striking out a season-high 13 batters. He allowed just three hits and a walk in the shutout.
