LAS VEGAS - New Mexico (25-28-1) went on a hitting spree, scoring eight runs in the first and 10 runs in the fourth innings of play to end the Air Force's (6-49) hopes of advancing to the next round of the MWC Tournament, defeating the Falcons 23-2 in an elimination game on Thursday night. With the win the Lobos will face the University of Utah tomorrow at 11 a.m.
UNM started the night off in the first inning as junior shortstop Josh Mader hit his 10th home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field. Sophomore second baseman Ryan Barba singled to bring in a run while junior center fielder Matt Young and junior left fielder Garrick Haymore each drove in two.
New Mexico's biggest inning came in the bottom of the fourth as they posted 10 more runs on the scoreboard, sending a Mountain West Conference Tournament record 15 batters to the plate. In the inning, the seven different Lobos drove in runs, including three doubles and a triple.
New Mexico's Jay Russell hit a two-run homer over the wall in left center in the bottom of the sixth, his second of the season.
New Mexico starter, freshman Danny Ray Herrera, (4-7) threw five innings, allowing just one run on three hits while walking two and striking out three in the win.
Center fielder Matt Young paced the Lobo offense, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Mader also drove in four runs, finishing 3-for-7. First baseman Daniel Stovall and designated hitter Joe Salas each recorded three hits and two RBI on the night.
For the Falcons, starter William Goss (0-1) was charged with the loss, going just two-thirds while allowing seven runs on four hits, walking three and striking out none. Karl Bolt was 2-for-4 for the Falcons, while shortstop Nathan DeRohan was also 2-for-4 and with an RBI.
GAME 6 NOTES
New Mexico snapped a seven-game losing streak in MWC Tournament contests with tonight's victory over Air Force. The Falcons are eliminated from the tournament and finish the season with a 6-49 record. New Mexico, now 25-28-1, advances to play Utah in an elimination game Friday at 11 a.m.
New Mexico posted a 4-2 record vs. Utah in the regular season and will face the Utes for the fourth time in MWC Tournament play, trailing 1-2 in those games.
Overall New Mexico set nine MWC Tournament team records (at bats, hits, runs scored, RBI, largest margin of victory) and two individual MWC Tournament records (at bats-Josh Mader, Joe Salas, runs scored-Daniel Stovall) vs. Air Force tonight.
New Mexico was 0-6 in MWC Tournament elimination games before tonight's victory over Air Force.
The No. 2 seed is now 11-7 all-time in MWC Tournament play, while the No. 6 seed is 3-10 - the Lobos are 4-9 all-time in the MWC Tournament, while the Falcons are 3-10.
New Mexico's Daniel Stovall hit .692 with six home runs and 13 RBI vs. the Falcons in six regular season contests. He was 3-for-4 with an MWC Tournament record five runs scored, a triple and a home run tonight vs. Air Force.
Including tonight, New Mexico's Joe Salas hit eight doubles in seven games vs. Air Force this season.
New Mexico hit .461 in six regular season games vs. Air Force, and went 25-of-50 from the plate tonight vs. the Falcons.
