Aztecs Stymie Utes, 8-0
SDSU to face UNLV Friday at 3 p.m.; winner advances to title game.
May 27, 2004
LAS VEGAS - San Diego State (34-27) broke up what had been a pitcher's duel in the bottom of the fifth inning as it cruised to a 8-0 victory over Utah (22-35) on Thursday afternoon in the second round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Tournament.
Both teams remained hitless in the contest until the bottom of the fifth, when SDSU senior third baseman Chad Corona took the second pitch of the inning deep over the center field wall, his seventh of the season.
SDSU added three runs in the sixth, as sophomore shortstop James Guerrero scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter Brock Ungricht, and Corona doubled to left center to bring in senior left fielder Josh Hill and senior first baseman Rielly Embrey.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Aztecs tacked on four more runs as Embrey tripled to center field to score a run before Zawadzki singled to drive in his first run of the day. Hill picked up two more RBI as he homered to right center, scoring Zawadzki and giving the Aztecs an 8-0 lead.
SDSU starter, Scott Shoemaker (9-6) carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh before Utah junior center fielder Matt Ciaramella singled to left field. In the complete game win, Shoemaker allowed just three hits, while walking just one Utah batter and striking out five.
For the Aztecs, Corona was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and three RBI. Embrey finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in while Hill was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Utah starter, junior right-hander Doug Mackay (4-9) allowed four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six in the loss. Ciaramella, shortstop Ryan Khoury, and catcher Trevor Eastman picked up Utah's three hits.
With the win, the Aztecs will advance to play UNLV in the winner's bracket at 3 p.m. Friday, while Utah will play the winner of tonight's Air Force vs. New Mexico game at 11 a.m. Friday.
GAME 5 NOTES
San Diego State advanced to the MWC Tournament semifinals for the fifth straight year - the Aztecs are the only team to make it to the MWC Tournament finals four straight years. A win over UNLV in the 3 p.m. game Friday would make it five straight appearances for the Aztecs in the finals.
The Aztecs are 14-6 all-time in MWC Tournaments, while Utah falls to 5-9 in MWC Tournament play. The Utes must now battle through the loser's bracket for the fifth straight year - Utah is 4-4 in MWC Tournament elimination games and will face the winner of Thursday night's Air Force vs. New Mexico game.
With SDSU's win today over Utah, the No. 1 seed is now a perfect 5-0 in MWC Tournament opening round games.
SDSU's Chad Corona was 3-for-3 today vs. Utah with a single, a double, a homer and three RBI. Corona had hit .286 vs. the Utes in six regular season meetings.
Through eight innings, Matt Ciaramella was the only Utah player to record a hit vs. Aztec hurler Scott Shoemaker. Shoemaker tossed just the second complete-game shutout (Ben Julianel, SDSU vs. Air Force 5/17/01) in MWC Tournament history.
