Utah snaps thirteen-game losing streak to BYU.

LAS VEGAS - Utah (22-34) used a three run sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and pull away from BYU (28-29) 10-4 in the opening game of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Utes snapped a thirteen-game losing streak to the Cougars, who had not lost in the opening round of the Mountain West Tournament the last four years.
The Cougars struck first in the bottom of the first, as junior left fielder Kory Knell scored on a sacrifice fly hit to left field by sophomore shortstop Brandon Taylor, taking the early 1-0 lead.
The Utes answered, scoring a run in each of the next two innings. In the second, junior designated hitter Tyson Olson scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman left fielder John Welsh , and in the third, junior center fielder Matt Ciaramella's RBI single to center field scored freshman third baseman Jay Brossman, giving the Utes their first lead of the day.
In the bottom half of the inning, Knell came around to score for the Cougars on an error by Utah's Brossman, tying the game at 2-2.
Both teams scored in the fifth, with Utah's coming on a solo home run by sophomore shortstop Ryan Khoury, his sixth of the season. BYU answered with a run came as junior center fielder Ryan Chambers scored on a RBI single by Knell.
The Utes pulled out to a 6-3 lead in the top of the sixth, getting an RBI-doubles from senior first baseman Michael Westfall, Olson and Welsh in the inning.
Westfall paced the Utah offense, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Olson and Brossman both finished the game 3-for-5.
For the Cougars, Knell was 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored while Taylor was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
BYU starter Patrick Wells (7-5) was charged with the loss, going five and one-third innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out three.
For the Utes, sophomore left-hander Jason Price (4-8) picked up the win, allowing four runs on ten hits in eight innings while striking out five and walking none.
With the win, the Utes advance to the winner's bracket where they will either play at 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. Thursday, depending on the outcome of today's Air Force vs. UNLV game. The Cougars will play again tonight in the loser's bracket at 7 p.m.
GAME 1 NOTES
Utah snapped a 13-game losing streak to BYU with today's win. (The last Utah win vs. BYU was May 9, 2002). The Utes are now 2-2 vs. BYU in MWC Tournament games.
BYU was 4-0 in MWC Tournament first-round games entering this year's event, but the streak ended with today's loss to Utah.
The No. 4 seed is now 1-4 all-time in MWC Tournament first-round games, while the No. 5 seed is 3-2.
Utah belted three straight RBI-doubles in the top of the sixth inning, breaking a 3-3 and building a 6-3 lead. The Utes finished the game with seven doubles, which ties the MWC Tournament single-game record (set by UNLV vs. Utah 5/22/02).
Utah's Tyson Olson set the MWC Tournament single-game record for doubles with three. Olson has 15 doubles this season.
Utah's Jason Price notched his 100th strikeout of the season in the fourth inning today vs. BYU. He has 103 strikeouts on the year and joins SDSU's Scott Shoemaker as the only two MWC pitchers with 100+ strikeouts this season.
BYU's Ben Saylor stretched his hitting streak to 14 straight games with a fourth-inning single today.
BYU's Kory Knell, last week's Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week, continued with a hot bat this week by going 3-for-4 vs. Utah with a double and a RBI. Knell is 16-for-25 (.640) in his last seven games with 16 RBI, five homers and four doubles.
