Aztecs Blank BYU, 6-0

SDSU to face UNLV Friday at 11 with winner advancing to title game.

May 22, 2003

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In game six of the 2003 Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship, held at the new Istopoes Park, No. 2 seed San Diego State (28-30) defeated No. 3 seed BYU (29-23), 6-0. The Aztecs face No. 1 seed UNLV at 11 a.m. Friday with a spot in Saturday's title game on the line.

San Diego State center fielder Anthony Gywnn set a conference tournament record with two triples in the game, including a first-inning shot to the deepest section of left-center, scoring Landon Burt who started the bottom of the first inning with a clean single to left.

San Diego State threatened in the bottom of the fifth when Jordan Swaydan singled up the middle and Landon Burt reached base on a bunt, but the BYU outfielders stepped up with impressive putouts by Ryan Chambers and Brock Jacobsen to end the inning. BYU loaded the bases in the sixth, but Ben Leuthard struck out Jacobsen to end the threat.

The score remained 1-0 until the Aztecs broke open the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Chad Corona led off with a single to left and Kyle Floquet followed with a double off the top of the left field fence. Jordan Swayden doubled, scoring Corona, but Floquet was thrown out at home after Cougar shortstop Ranger Wiens took the cutoff and fired home to catcher Casey Cloward for the putout. With the score 3-0, Gwynn came up with runners on second and third and delivered a triple down the right field line, getting his second and third RBI's of the game and stretching the lead to 5-0. The Aztecs added another run in the bottom of the eighth off a Swaydan triple over the glove of Chambers, to cap the scoring at 6-0.
