No. 3 BYU Eliminates No. 2 New Mexico with a 5-1 Win at 2009 Conoco MWC Baseball Championship
May 21, 2009 FORT WORTH, Texas - BYU right-handed starter Marc Oslund stuffed New Mexico's big-hitting lineup and eliminated the No. 2 Lobos in BYU's 5-1 victory in a loser's bracket matchup Thursday at the 2009 Conoco Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship at Lupton Stadium. Cougars' leadoff hitter Sean McNaughton was the source of BYU's offense, hitting the tournament's first two home runs, a pair of two-run shots. No. 3 BYU (30-23) advances to meet top-seeded TCU at 3 p.m. CT today in an elimination game. "To me they are the best hitting team in the country," Oslund said. "I have to put it on the spot. It was big facing them and I trusted my defense. We just put it all together today and we didn't want our summer to end." The Lobos (37-20) were held to two total runs in their two losses which was the team's lowest run total in back-to-back games this season. New Mexico, which touted five .400 hitters, struggled hitting at TCU's field. "It was bad and I can't explain it," New Mexico coach Ray Birmingham said. "We hit all year long until here." Oslund (7-1) tossed the first complete game of his career, allowing just four hits, while striking out three walking one. "With him being able to go nine we were able to preserve some arms and that was big for us with as many potential innings we have left," BYU coach Vance Law said. McNaughton had the first home run of the tournament in the third to give BYU a 2-0 lead. He blasted another two-run shot in the BYU's three-run fifth. McNaughton now has 10 home runs this season.
Rudy Jaramillo (4-2) took the loss for New Mexico.
