Solow's Gem Helps San Diego State Advance at 2008 Phillips 66 MWC Baseball Championship
May 21, 2008 FORT WORTH, Texas - San Diego State prevailed 1-0 over BYU Wednesday afternoon in a classic pitcher's duel between Aztec left-hander Nate Solow and Cougar righty Blake Torgerson in game three of the Phillips 66 Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship Wednesday at Lupton Stadium. The Aztecs (31-27) advance to play the loser of Wednesday afternoon's Utah-New Mexico match-up, Thursday at 11 a.m. BYU's (22-36) season ended with the setback to the Aztecs. SDSU hitter Brett Tanos delivered what would turn out to be the game-winning hit with two outs in the seventh inning on an RBI single that broke a scoreless tie. Center fielder Brandon Decker, who started the two-out rally by reaching on a walk, scored on the play after first baseman Erik Castro advanced him to second on a single to center field. Both Solow and Torgerson pitched into the final inning while trying to help their teams avoid elimination. Solow allowed only four hits while striking out six to earn his sixth win of the year. The sophomore issued one walk and retired 12 straight Cougars between the fourth and seventh innings. Right-hander Shane Kaufman recorded the final out with the tying run on third after relieving Solow with two outs in the ninth. Kaufman was able to induce Cougar rightfielder Jordan Cluff into lining out to shortstop Troy Hanzawa to preserve the win. Torgerson matched Solow's sharp effort nearly pitch-for-pitch until the seventh. He finished the contest allowing only the one run on six hits through eight innings. Torgerson sat down nine straight SDSU hitters from the fourth through seventh frames. SDSU second baseman Garrett Green went 2-for-4 at the plate, while third baseman Steve Parker, who smashed a home run Tuesday evening against Utah, collected two of the Cougars' four hits against Solow.
BYU suffered its first shutout since a 7-0 setback to TCU in Fort Worth on April 21, 2007.
