ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In game three of the 2003 Mountain West Conference Championship, No. 3 seed BYU held on for a 7-6 victory over No. 4 New Mexico as pinch-hitter Josh Jezek grounded to short with the tying run at second base to end the game.

New Mexico (34-25) threatened in the top of the fifth when Matt Young walked for the second time in the game and scored on an Dusty Young single to center field. Josh Mader popped up for the second out before Chris Alexander struck out, ending the side. New Mexico continued to rally in top of the seventh when Ryan Barba started the seventh with his second single of the game. Matt Young continued with another single before Dusty Young singled, loading the bases for Joe Salas who would eventually single to left with one out, scoring Ryan Barba.

BYU regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Brock Jacobsen homered deep over the center field's 400 foot mark, scoring Kainoa Obrey who reached on a single to left.

New Mexico's leading home run hitter Chris Alexander attempted to bring New Mexico back late in the ninth as he sent a 2-2 pitch to center field for a double, recording his 94th RBI on the season and pulling the Lobos to within one (6-7). BYU allowed starting pitcher Paul Jacinto to pitch 8 and 2/3 before bringing in Tyler Dabo to record his first save of the year.
