Budrow Pitches No. 5 Utah to MWC Winners Bracket At 2008 Phillips 66 MWC Baseball Championship

May 20, 2008

FORT WORTH, Texas -

Utah right-hander Brian Budrow limited BYU to only five hits during a complete-game effort to pitch the Utes to a 9-3 victory in game two of the Phillips 66 Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, Tuesday evening.

The win advanced fifth-seeded Utah (24-26) to a Wednesday showdown with No. 2 seed New Mexico, scheduled for 3 p.m. BYU (22-35) dropped to the loser's bracket, where it will meet third-seeded San Diego State Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Budrow allowed only two earned runs during a strong outing to collect his sixth win of the season. He struck out 10 Cougars on the evening while throwing 130 pitches. The effort marked his first complete game of the year.

Center fielder Tyler Relf, second baseman Corey Shimda and first baseman Austin Jones each notched multi-hit games to lead a Utah offensive attack that totaled 10 knocks against BYU pitching. Relf went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs, and Shimda added a pair of RBIs with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate. Catcher Jesse Shriner and left fielder Dustin Hennis each tagged BYU starter Jake Wortham for two-run homers for their only hits

Wortham gave up eight runs, six of which were earned, on eight hits while lasting five innings.

The Utes collected eight hits through the first six innings while moving out to an 8-0 lead. The squad scored runs in five of the innings and totaled five tallies between the fourth and fifth innings alone.

Hennis keyed the five-run stretch with a two-run homer with two outs in the third off Wortham that also plated designated hitter Cody Guymon, who earlier reached on a fielding error by BYU right fielder Jonathan Cluff with one out.

Shimada added to Utah's two-out success in the fourth, when he launched another two-run blast off Wortham. Shriner made it a 6-0 lead with a double down the left-field line to plate Guymon, who was hit by a pitch following the Shriner home run.

Utah took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Shimada doubled down the right-field line to lead off the contest and Guymon followed with a single. Despite Shriner grounding into a double play, Shimada was able to plate the game's first run.

The Utes added single tallies in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings. Relf accounted for RBIs in the fifth and ninth on singles, while Shriner added his second RBI in the sixth on a sacrifice fly that plated Shimada.

BYU collected its first two runs on a homer by third baseman Steve Parker in the seventh inning. The Cougars pushed across their third and final score in the ninth, as Bowen reached home on a double-play grounder with the bases loaded by Relf. Budrow was able to strike out pinch hitter Bryce Ayoso to end the contest during the ensuing at-bat.

Parker and shortstop Dan Vargas accounted for most of BYU's offense Tuesday with a pair of hits each.
