PROVO, Utah - BYU senior Michaela Mannova was selected as one of four female athletes nominated for the 2003-2004 Cross Country Honda Sports Award.

This award is given to a top female athlete within a Division I cross country program who has demonstrated academic excellence, top athletic ability, leadership and service within her community.

Mannova, a three-time All-American, has led the BYU team for the past three years placing fifth in both 2001 and 2002 and fourth in 2003 at the NCAA Championships leading the Cougars to two first place finishes and this year's runner-up finish.

In honor of her accomplishments, American Honda will donate $1,000 to BYU's women's athletic fund.

Other nominees for the award were Stanford's Sara Bei, North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan, the 2003 NCAA National Champion and Providence's Kimberly Smith.

After nationwide balloting, Shalane Flanagan was honored as the 2003-2004 recipient and now becomes a nominee for The Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and The Honda-Broderick Cup that is awarded annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year.
