COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 8th-ranked BYU men's cross country team finished a stellar season with a fifth-place finish at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country National Championships today at Indiana State University's LaVern Gibson Championship Course at The Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind. No. 14 Air Force and No. 19 New Mexico finished the championship in 18th and 19th place, respectively, while No. 24 Colorado State finished 29th.

The Cougars improved on their 19th place finish in the 2003 National Championship by placing two runners in the top-45 and three in the top-85 for a total score of 267. Junior Josh Rohatinsky led BYU with a time of 31:44.6 (22nd place). Senior Bryan Lindsay was the next Cougar to finish the race (41st, 32:04.2), followed by freshman Chandler Goodwin (44th, 32:08.4), freshman Dustin Bybee (78th, 32:40.2), senior Chad Durham (82nd, 32:42.4), senior Matt Adams (162nd, 33:40.0) and senior Nathan Robison (192nd, 34:59.7).

No. 19 New Mexico was the next highest MWC institution, placing ninth with 330 points. Senior Matt Gonzales and freshman Shadrack Biwott paced the Lobos with top-10 finishes. Gonzales had the best finish ever for an MWC participant (2nd place, 30:40.9), while Biwott finished 10th in 31:16.9. Senior Ben Ortega (77th, 32:40.2), junior Cameron Clarke (104th, 33:00.4) and senior Sean Flaherty (137th, 33:22.2) finished the scoring for UNM.

No. 14 Air Force finished 14th and was led by senior Brian Dumm (57th, 32:25.4). The other Falcon scorers were juniors Jeff Gosselin (61st, 32:26.6) and Nick Wilson (85th, 32:43.5), senior Abe Wengel (89th, 32:47.9) and junior Matt Hellier (90th, 32:48.5).

No. 24 Colorado State placed 29th with 574 points. Senior Mike Nicks (26th, 31:47.3) was the first Ram to cross the finish line, followed by junior Josh Glaab (73rd, 32:33.8), senior Matt Pettitt (131st, 33:19.4), juniors Matt Cianciulli (170th, 33:57.7) and Paul Michel (174th, 34:00.8), and freshman Jeff Scull (182nd, 32:23.2), to round out the CSU scoring.

Colorado brought home the team title, while Wisconsin's Simon Bairu won the men's individual title.
