Nov. 17, 2004

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference will be represented by six of its eight member institutions at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships, hosted by Indiana State University, on Monday, Nov. 22, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course at The Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind.

On the men's side, No. 8 BYU earned an automatic bid for its second-place finish in last week's Mountain Regional in Fort Collins, Colo. No. 14 Air Force, No. 19 New Mexico and No. 24 Colorado State all earned at-large invitations to the NCAA Championships. The Falcons finished third at the Mountain Regionals, while the Lobos and Rams finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Air Force finished eighth in the 2003 NCAA Championships, while Colorado State and BYU finished 18th and 19th, respectively. New Mexico will compete in the national meet for the first time as a member of the Mountain West Conference.

Heading the list for the women is No. 11 BYU. On the strength of their second-place finish at the Mountain Regional the Cougars earned an automatic invitation to the National Championship, where they finished second in 2003. No. 26 Colorado State finished third in the Mountain Regional to earn an at-large invitation. The Rams finished 28th in last year's meet. Individually, New Mexico's Jacquelyne Gallegos, Utah's Elise Greenwood and Wyoming's Jennifer Thompson were selected to compete in this year's women's championship.
