COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference will be represented by five of its eight member institutions and five individuals at the 2001 NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday, November 19, at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Heading the list for the women is No. 2 BYU. On the strength of their second-place finish in last weekend's NCAA Mountain Regional in Provo, Utah, the Cougars earned an automatic invitation to the National Championship, where they will make a strong bid for their second national title in three years. No. 16 Colorado State finished third in the Mountain Regional, earning its second straight at-large invitation. Individually, New Mexico freshman Jacquelyne Gallegos earned an automatic invitation, finishing 19th out of 118 runners. Brandess Pardue, a sophomore from the Air Force Academy, also earned an automatic invitation to the Championship with her 23rd place finish in the Regional.

On the men's side, No. 12 BYU, No. 15 Air Force and No. 23 Colorado State earned at-large invitations to the Championships. The Cougars finished third at Regionals, while the Falcons and the Rams finished fifth and fourth, respectively. Mountain West Conference runner of the year Teren Jameson (Utah) heads the list of individuals for the men. Jameson had the strongest individual performance for the conference in Provo, finishing 3rd out 112 runners overall. New Mexico runners Matt Gonzales and Ben Ortega round out the individual participants. Gonzales and Ortega, both sophomores, finished ninth and 11th respectively, to earn automatic invites.

The NCAA Cross Country Championships will feature 31 men's and women's teams and 38 individuals on each side. The men's 10K race will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern time, with the women's 6K following at 12:15 p.m.
