COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 2001 Mountain West Conference men's and women's cross country championships will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Paradise Hills Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. The women's 6K race will begin at 10 a.m., with the men's 8K at 10:45 a.m.

The women's race will feature second-ranked and two-time defending conference champion BYU and no. 12 Colorado State. The Cougars, favorites to bring home the conference crown, were runners-up in last year's NCAA Championship in Ames, Iowa. Individually, BYU returns last year's winner Lindsey Thomsen, along with third-place finisher Tara Northcutt, and top-10 finishers Katie Martin and Nan Evans. Colorado State's Katie Yemm and Marget Larson will also make a strong run at the championship.

For the men, ninth-ranked Air Force and no. 22 Colorado State are favorites to win the title, with two-time defending champion and16th-ranked BYU also in the hunt. The race for the individual title should go down to the wire, with three of last year's top-10 finishers back again. BYU's John Hedengren finished second in last year's race, Utah's Teren Jameson finished third and Air Force's Benjamin Payne finished eighth.
