COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – BYU junior John Hedengren and San Diego State junior Sophia Hawker have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men’s and women’s cross country athletes of the week, respectively.

Competing at the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., Oct. 16, Hedengren, a Richland, Wash., native, ran to a 13th-place finish with a time of 24:32 as the Cougars finished in eighth place in the elite field consisting of 35 teams. He has led his team in each competition this season and his time was the fastest for a Mountain West Conference men’s runner this season. This is the second athlete of the week honor for Hedengren.

Hawker, a San Diego native, equaled her best time of the season at the UCSD Invitational in San Diego. Her time of 18:24 was good for eighth place in the field of 214 runners as San Diego State finished fourth out of 20 teams. Hawker has been the top runner for the Aztecs in each of their meets and has registered six of San Diego State’s seven fastest times this season.

BYU and San Diego State will next compete at the inaugural Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships in Provo, Utah, Oct. 29.
