Rebels to Host UNLV Invitational This Weekend UNLV looking for first ever victory in home meet.
Oct. 13, 1999
Storyline: The UNLV cross country team will host its first and only meet of the year, the UNLV Invitational, on Saturday, October 16 at Las Vegas’ Sunset Park. The meet will feature a 5-kilometer women’s race only, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The field will include Hawaii, Utah and Southern Utah. Last year’s UNLV Invitational: The Rebels’ Angie Fortner won her second straight individual race, capturing the 1998 UNLV Invitational in 17:29.0. It was not enought to lead her team to victory, however, as upstate rival Nevada, Reno edged the Rebels, 25-34. Sharlene Downing (Las Vegas, NV/Cheyenne) is the top returning finisher, placing seventh in 19:42. Post-meet results: Results should be available for coaches immediately following the race. A complete results package will be faxed to each school’s sports information office and should also be available on the internet at www.unlvrebels.com and on the Fax On Demand system, passcode 692, document 1972. Head Coach Karen Dennis: Karen Dennis is in her eighth year overseeing the cross country and track and field program at UNLV. In 1997, she was named by USA Track and Field as the head coach for the women’s national team that will compete in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She has coached 13 All-Americans since arriving at UNLV and was the 1993 MPSF Coach of the Year.
Quoting Distance Coach Mary Shea: “We have had several weeks to prepare for this meet, and it is an important one. We would like to win our home meet, something we have not done. This is also our last competition before conference, so it is important for us to be in top running form.”
