Utah's Christenson and UNLV's Lopez Earn Mountain West Conference Cross Country Honors Christenson leads Utes to team victory at Long Beach Invitational.
Oct. 11, 2000 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Utah junior BJ Christenson and UNLV senior Jenni Lopez have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men's and women's cross country athletes of the week, respectively. Competing at the Long Beach Invitational Oct. 7, Christenson was the first Ute to finish in the 8K race with a time of 25:09. His 2nd-place victory out of 77 runners led the Utes to a 1st-place team victory. The Burley, Idaho native's time is a personal best and currently ranks in the top 15 of the Mountain West Conference Best Times for an 8K race. Lopez, a native of Renton, Wash., cruised to a 3rd-place finish out of 93 total runners in the Long Beach Invitational. Her time of 17:52 in the 5K race is a personal best, shaving nearly 20 seconds off her previous best time. The senior's time was a first under 18 minutes and currently ranks sixth in the Mountain West Conference Best Times in a 5K race. Up Next: The Utah men head to the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Ames, Iowa, a highly competitive meet where they will face the nation's top ranked teams. The Utah women meet up with UNLV at the UNLV invitational in Las Vegas.
Other MWC teams in action this week: Air Force, BYU, Colorado State and Wyoming all travel to the Pre-NCAA Invitational while San Diego State competes in both the UCSD Invitational in San Diego and the UNLV Invitational. All races are Saturday, Oct. 14.
