Mountain West Conference Cross Country Athletes Of The Week Air Force's Payne and BYU's Northcutt garner weekly honors.
Sept. 26, 2001
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force Academy sophomore Ben Payne and BYU senior Tara Northcutt have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men's and women's cross country athletes of the week, respectively. Payne led the Falcons to their first team victory of the season with his first place finish at the New Mexico Invitational on Sept. 22. He finished the 8K race in 24:20 as Air Force placed five of its runners in the top 10 on the way to bringing home the victory. Payne's finishing time at the invite is tops in the MWC for the 8K this season. Northcutt proved why she is a two-time cross country All-American as she cruised to victory against a competitive field at the Great American Festival in Rock Hill, S.C. on Sept. 22. The Provo native's time of 16:56.3 in the 6K event led 304 runners across the finish line and helped the Cougars (ranked fourth nationally) to a second place finish out of 31 schools. Next up for the Falcons is the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. while the BYU women's team travels to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the Stanford Invitational. Both events will be held on Sept. 29.
This week in the MWC: The BYU men's team and Colorado State will join the Air Force Academy at the Roy Griak Invite, while San Diego State and Utah joins the BYU women's team in Palo Alto for the Stanford Invitational. UNLV stays home this weekend to host the UNLV Invitational. All events are slated for Sept. 29.
