BYU Cross Country Third At Invitational Hedengren and Rohatinsky finish in the top ten.
Sept. 26, 2000
MINNEAPOLIS - Junior John Hedengren and freshman Josh Rohatinsky finished in the top ten, in a field of over 250 runners, to lead the Cougars to a third-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational. Hedengren finished in eigth place with a time of 24:41, just ahead of Rohtinsky, who crossed the line in 24:42 for ninth-place. Providence College senior Keith Kelly won the individual title in 24:12, leading his team to victory ahead of the University of Wisconsin and BYU.
The high finish will likely vault the Cougars into the national rankings, as the Minnesota meet attracted some of the best teams in the country. The field of 31 teams included nine of the preseason top 25.
Providence came into the race with a No. 14 ranking, and Wisconsin was the No. 6 team in the poll. BYU coach Ed Eyestone was pleased with his team's performance at the prestigious meet, and feels that the results will help put them on the national scene.
"This was one of the biggest meets of the year," Eyestone said. "It was a good race by really everyone on the team. This will definitely move us up in rankings."
The Cougars will have plenty of time to prepare for their next race, as they take the next two weekends off. They will return to action October 14, when they travel to Ames, Iowa, to compete in the Pre-national Invitational.
