COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Air Force Academy C1C (Sr.) Patrick Shanahan and BYU junior Sharolyn Shields have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men’s and women’s cross country athletes of the week, respectively.

Competing at the Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln, Sept. 18, Shanahan had a career performance with a time of 26:13.58 and was the Falcons’ top finisher. The Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, native finished in 12th place ahead of 188 other competitors. Air Force finished tied for first in the event which featured six Division I teams.

Shields, a native of Calgary, Alberta, made her 1999 debut a memorable one as she finished third overall at the BYU Triple Crown Invitational. Her time of 17:01.70 led the Cougars and beat her previous career high of 17:15 established in 1998. BYU, ranked first in the nation, finished in second place in the event behind second-ranked Stanford.

Air Force will next compete at the Stanford Invitational on Oct. 2, while BYU will return to the course at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota on Sept. 25.
