Sept. 16, 2003

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU junior Kip Kangogo and San Diego State senior Marie Nilsson have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men's and women's cross country athletes of the week, respectively.

Kangogo, a Kabarnet, Kenya, native, started the 2003 season with a first place finish (out of 82 runners) at the BYU Autumn Classic last weekend in Provo. He finished the four-mile race in a personal best 19.33.4, 22.5 seconds faster than the second place finisher (teammate Nathan Robison).

Nilsson, a Kil, Sweden, native, had an excellent showing in her Aztecs debut, finishing 4th out of 125 runners at last weekend's Aztec Invitational in San Diego. She posted a team season-best 18:23.00 in the 5K race, turning in the best overall finish for an Aztec runner at the Aztec Invitational since 1981 and the best time for an SDSU runner at the Invite since 1998. Nilsson led SDSU to a sixth place finish at the Aztec Invite, which included No. 10 Northern Arizona, No. 24 UCLA and USC.

The Cougar men have the week off, while the Aztecs split their squad. The SDSU "A" squad will compete at the Hawaii Big Wave Invitational in Kanehoe, Hawaii, and the "B" squad will be in Riverside, Calif., for the Riverside Invitational. Both events are scheduled for Oct. 20.
