MWC Cross Country Athletes of the Week BYU's Dustin Bybee and New Mexico's Jacquelyne Gallegos honored
Sept. 14, 2005 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU sophomore Dustin Bybee and New Mexico senior Jacquelyne Gallegos have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men's and women's cross country athletes of the week, respectively. Bybee, from Orem, Utah, paced the fourth-ranked Cougars with a first-place finish at the BYU Autumn Classic on Saturday in Provo, Utah. He crossed the finish line in 20:14.50 (four-mile course) as BYU claimed the team title. Gallegos, a Pojoaque, N.M., native, recorded her first collegiate victory at the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Saturday. She finished the 6K race in 21:37, breaking open a tight race midway through the course to finish 26 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Gallegos became the first UNM woman to win the home meet since 2002, helping the Lobos' to their lowest point total (89) since 2002 and a third place finish. In the strong 13-team field, New Mexico finished ahead of Texas Tech, LSU and UTEP, as well as Western State College, which is ranked third in NCAA Division II.
