RENO, Nev. -
The Nevada Athletics Department and Nature's Bakery will partner to host the Nature's Bakery Nevada Twilight Cross Country Classic. The cross country classic will take place on Saturday, September 8 at Shadow Mountain Park.
"I am excited and grateful that Nature's Bakery has come on board to sponsor our annual Twilight Classic," head coach Kirk Elias said. "Their generous sponsorship enables us to continue a truly unique event in our sport. Our Twilight Classic is the only combined high school and college cross country meet under lights, west of the Mississippi."
The meet which has divisions for eighth grade and under, high school and college, will be held in memory of Jim Vanden Heuvel. Vanden Heuvel was a former Reno-Tahoe Olympic committee member who played a large role in the program hosting the first Twilight Classic in 2007. The meet begins at 6:10 p.m. with eighth grade and under boys and girls running 3,000-meters. The divisions will then run at 25 minute intervals for freshman boys, freshman girls, sophomore boys, sophomore girls, junior/senior boys and junior/senior girls each running 4,000 meters. The 6,000 meters college/open women division will run at 9:10 p.m. and the men at 9:35 p.m. A community/open 4,000 meters race at 10:00 p.m. will close out the classic.
"Nature's Bakery has been a long time supporter of cross country and track and field in northern Nevada and northern California," Nature's Bakery President, Dave Marson said. "We are excited about this new partnership and look forward to helping the University of Nevada continue to strengthen cross country in northern Nevada. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Twilight Classic."
