NEW ORLEANS - Eight Mountain West Conference women's teams, including BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming, have been honored as 2008 USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams, announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. On the men's side, Air Force, BYU and New Mexico all received All-Academic Team accolades.

A record total of 160 women's Division I programs received the USTFCCCA's academic honor, which is 45 percent of all Division I schools that sponsor women's cross country (394). In all, a record 110 Division I men's programs also received the honor. There are 315 teams in Division I that sponsor men's cross country.

On the women's side, Utah had a combined grade point average of 3.656, while Colorado State (3.419), BYU (3.410), Wyoming (3.367), New Mexico (3.320) and TCU (3.310) followed closely behind. San Diego State and UNLV finished the fall term with team GPAs of 3.170 and 3.150, respectively. For the men, BYU topped the list for MWC schools with a 3.180 GPA, while New Mexico combined for a 3.060 GPA and Air Force totaled a 3.050 GPA.

For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, it must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative grade point average.

Individually, BYU junior Angela Wagner, Colorado State sophomore Ellie Rastall, New Mexico senior Michelle Corrigan, Utah junior Alyssa Abbott and Wyoming junior Emily Higgens were named to the 2008 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA Women's All-Academic Cross Country Team, while Air Force senior Matt Williams was named to the men's team.

A total of 77 female student-athletes representing 52 Division I institutions, and 40 male student-athletes representing 34 Division I institutions were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic teams.

The award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average through the 2008 fall term. Additionally, the student-athlete must finish in the top-15 runners or top-ten percent of finishers at their respective NCAA regional meet, or receive All-American honors.
