LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's track and field volunteer assistant Mary Duerbeck finished 13th recently at the United States Cross Country Championships and has been selected to the U.S. National Team.

At the cross country championships Duerbeck ran a time of 29:20 in the 8K at Boulder, Colo., to finish 13th at the meet where she ran head-to-head with several Olympians, including 2004 marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor, who won the race. Duerbeck was just three seconds behind '04 5,000 meter Olympian Shayne Culpepper and six seconds behind Kate O'Neill, who ran the 10,000 meters in the 2004 summer games.

Duerbeck, who is coached by current Rebel cross country coach Tony Houchin, will be part of a U.S. Team that will compete in two international events in March. Duerbeck will head to Clermont, Fla., for the NACAC Cross Country Championships on March 3 and at the end of the month she will compete in the IAAF World Championships in Mombasa, Kenya, on March 24.

"When I found out I had made the team I screamed and then cried. This is such an amazing opportunity for me," Duerbeck said. "I feel honored to have been selected to represent my country at the world championships. It wasn't just me working hard, it was Tony's guidance and coaching that helped me get to this point."
